Member Awards

Awards offered to members of the Alaskan Malamute Club of Canada help recognize and reward those members who are actively promoting their Alaskan Malamutes and achieving a variety of accomplishments with them for each showing year.

Each year the AMCC recognizes the accomplishments of our breed in both Conformation and Obedience. There are four statisticians; one for Conformation, Obedience, the Canadian Award of Merit for Conformation (CAM), and the Canadian Award of Merit for Obedience (CAMO). Statistics are compiled from the show and trials results published in the Canadian Kennel Club "Official Section" of the " Dogs in Canada" magazine. The results are published on an annual basis in the AMCC's official newsletter, the Malamute Review. It is important for all members to ensure that any show result's printed in the CKC's publication are correct and if not inform the CKC of any inaccuracies.

Member of the Year

Not necessarily awarded every year, this award recognizes the hard work and dedication of some members to our Breed and our Club. Once a year the AMCC Board solicits the membership through the Malamute Review, to nominate and provide a brief resume of an AMCC member that they feel should be recognized. From the nominations and resumes received, the Board may then choose a candidate to receive this honorable award.

Conformation

The AMCC issues annual awards based on Malamutes defeated in each show year to member-owned Malamutes placing in the following categories:

- Plaque Top Winning Malamute overall

- Plaque Top Producing Sire and Dam

- Certificate Top 10 winning dogs

- Certificate Top 10 winning bitches

- Certificate Top winning Best of Breed (BB)

- Best of Opposite (BOS)

in each of the AMCC's five geographical areas.

Awards are issued to the top producing sire and dam based on the highest number of progeny completing Canadian Championships in each show year.

Obedience

The AMCC issues annual obedience awards to AMCC member owned Malamutes:

Plaque: Top scoring Alaskan Malamute, overall

Certificate: #2 - #10 Alaskan Malamutes

Calculations are based on the highest average of the first three qualifying scores for Novice (CD) level and the highest average of all qualifying scores earned at the Open (CDX) and Utility (UD) levels. Top scoring Malamute overall is based on the highest average at the CD, CDX, or UD level.

The Canadian Award of Merit
for Conformation (CAM)

The membership of the Alaskan Malamute Club of Canada decided that it needed an award to recognize a top producer that was based on more than just Champions produced. The AMCC wanted to recognize kennels who were producing quality and not necessarily just churning out numbers. So, in 1987 the AMCC approved the institution of the Canadian Award of Merit. All qualifying Malamutes, whether or not AMCC member owned will be recognized in the AMCC Malamute Review on an annual basis. Member owned qualifying Malamutes will automatically receive awards while non-members will be required to apply to the AMCC Board through the Recording Secretary.

The Canadian Award of Merit is based on offspring earning points which are credited to their particular sire and dam:

Qualifications:

Bitch 10 points are required to be earned by the offspring of any female for her to qualify. Dog 15 points are required to be earned by the offspring of any male for him to qualify. These points are earned in accordance with the following scale:

One (1) point for any Mal finishing its Canadian Championship.

Two (2) points for any Mal winning a Group placing or Specialty Best of Breed.

Three (3) points for any Mal winning multiple (two or more) Group placings multiple Specialty (not Boosters) Best of Breed wins, or any combination thereof.

Four (4) points for any Mal winning one or more All Breed - Best in Show

A dog/bitch must finish its Canadian Championship before any points are credited to the particular sire and dam. Each step on the scale represents total points, for example, a Champion that wins a Group 4 for his first Group placing would go from one point to two points total, not one point plus two points. Therefore, the maximum any one offspring can accumulate for their sire/dam is four points.

The Canadian Award of Merit for Obedience (CAMO)

The Alaskan Malamute is an intelligent, independent, easily bored, working dog. In the formal obedience ring, the Malamute has a reputation of being stubborn, hard to train, or a clown. When educated in a positive manner and not "rote" or "force trained", the Mal is capable of learning and excelling in a variety of activities. Indeed, Malamutes, like any other breed, certainly have the capabilities to learn the basic obedience skills of heel on or off a lead, stand for examination, come when called, sit/stay (1 minute), and down stay (3 minutes). These basic living skills are what is tested in the Canadian Kennel Club's Novice level. Dogs successfully earning three qualifying scores earn the Companion Dog (CD) Degree.

In 1989, the AMCC instituted the Canadian Award of Merit for Obedience (CAMO) to recognize and honor the sires and dams of obedience titled offspring:

Qualifications:

Sires: 7 "CD" titled offspring

Dams: 5 "CD" titled offspring

The recorded keeping for this award is tabulated from the lists of new Companion Dogs published in "Dogs in Canada" magazine. The AMCC Board now awards attractive plaques to AMCC members who own CAMO qualified sires and dams. The CAMO is difficult to earn but not impossible. The owners of the sires and dams cannot do it by themselves as they must have help from their clients. From a breeder's and a client's standpoint, The CAMO demonstrates the ability of sires and dams to produce pups with good sound attitudes that have been tested in a formal manner through CKC obedience trials.
