Advisory Committee on Medical Imaging

Hand

The Chair and members of the Advisory Committee on Medical Imaging include representatives from Radiology, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Nuclear Medicine, representatives from the Department of Health and others as required.

The objectives of the Committee are to investigate and advise on medical imaging equipment and services, including the consideration of the economic implications involved in the provision of such services.

The Committee meets these objectives by:

  1. establishing and maintaining quality standards of medical imaging services;
  2. establishing and maintaining standards for the appropriate and proper use of medical imaging equipment;
  3. inspecting and evaluating existing services and facilities as required;
  4. reviewing manpower and equipment needs with respect to the provision of those services and facilities;
  5. investigating and recommending mechanisms to prevent over-servicing and over-utilization of services in relation to overall costs;
  6. facilitating continuing education of medical, allied professionals and employees with respect to medical imaging usage, procedure, hazards and safety; and,
  7. advising on the credentialling of physicians providing medical imaging services.

The Committee has developed guidelines for primary care physicians regarding the appropriate use of screening vs. diagnostic mammography and for the performance of obstetrical ultrasound. Because osteoporosis is a "hot topic" among clinicians and patients, the Committee is developing guidelines for indications and performance of Dual Energy X-ray Absorptionmetry (DEXA), an important technique for the evaluation of osteoporosis.

The Committee remains keenly aware of the need to develop standards for the operation of imaging facilities in Saskatchewan and will continue its efforts toward defining the nature and scope of such standards.

A report of the Committee's activities is published each year.
