The College of Physicians andThe Laboratory Quality Assurance Program determines whether a medical laboratory meets acceptable standards of quality assurance. As a component of the quality system, each service should periodically assess its operations and compare them against internal and external benchmarks to ensure that it is effectively meeting the stated requirements. Each laboratory is mandated to participate in an external quality assurance program for all tests performed.
Through the external proficiency testing program we are able to monitor the accuracy and precision of laboratory test results. The Deficiency Followup Form is used when proficiency testing results fall outside the expected standard of practice. When a test method does not meet the expected standard, a corrective action followup process is implemented. The Deficiency Followup Form is used to document the correction action performed.
The Laboratory Quality Assurance Program presents the followup initiatives to the discipline specific committees for review. The outcome of this review process is the development of educational initiatives in the form of guidelines, policies, and standards. These educational initiatives are implemented to standardize and improve service throughout the province.
